The Assessor’s Office is accepting applications for the local option tax credit.

The credit is for elderly or totally disabled homeowners. An applicant must have turned 65 years old by Dec. 31, 2017 or be totally disabled under Social Security guidelines, regardless of age. To be eligible for the credit, residents must have lived in town for one year or more and all taxes must be current. Beacon Falls must be the applicant’s primary residence, and applicants must reside at said property for at least 186 days or more in the calendar year. Proof of income for the 2017 calendar year is also required at the time of application.

In order to receive this benefit an initial application must be filed with the Assessor’s Office and renewed every two years. Any resident who previously qualified for the program is asked to be sure a current application is on file. If an application has expired the benefit cannot be given on this year’s July tax bill.

There is an income restriction: $75,000 for a single person, $150,000 for a married couple. Take a copy of your federal tax return to show the assessor when you fill out the application at Beacon Falls Town Hall, Assessor's Office, first floor.

Applications are available in the Assessor’s Office. The deadline to file an application is May 15. For more information, call the Assessor’s Office at (203) 723-5253.
